I really enjoyed Great Expectations and it is probably my favorite Dickens novel. There has however, been some confusion about the ending. There are a few different variations to the last line, all with different possible meanings.
- I saw the shadow of no parting from her. (the earliest ending, appeared in all texts before 1862)
- I saw the shadow of no parting from her, but one. (the last two words were stricken from the manuscript)
- I saw no shadow of another parting from her. (modern texts after 1862)
So what do you think? Which ending do you like better and what do you think happened with Pip and Estella? Was the meeting in the garden their last?
